Pruning Hardwoods for Wind, Light and Clearance
Tree trimming and pruning on a Fort Myers lot is mostly about structure. A live oak, mahogany or black olive that grows untouched for ten years can end up with several competing trunks, long limbs reaching over the roof, and heavy ends that catch wind like a sail. Good pruning removes the weak, crossing and dead parts while keeping the tree's natural shape, so wind passes through the crown and the remaining limbs are attached well. Poor pruning, especially topping, does the opposite: it leaves stubs that decay and a flush of weakly attached sprouts that break in the next storm.
The standard we prune to
The tree care industry's pruning standard is ANSI A300, and the International Society of Arboriculture's guidance is built around it. Cuts are made just outside the branch collar, the swollen area where a limb joins the trunk, so the tree can seal the wound. No more live canopy is removed than the tree can spare. Lee County's own landscape rules for required trees in unincorporated areas follow the same idea: pruning has to meet ANSI A300 and ISA practice, and topping, hat-racking and similar cuts are treated as severe pruning that can bring fines for both the owner and the contractor and an order to plant replacement trees.
Live oaks and laurel oaks
UF/IFAS research on South Florida trees puts live oak in the highest wind-resistance group and laurel oak in a medium-low group. A well-pruned live oak with a single strong trunk and evenly spaced limbs is one of the safest trees you can have near a house. Laurel oaks grow fast, often develop decay in the trunk and major forks as they age, and are worth inspecting more closely. With both, structural pruning while the tree is young or middle-aged costs less and does more than corrective work after a storm.
Clearance work
Common reasons homeowners call: limbs rubbing a tile or shingle roof, branches dropping leaves and debris into a pool cage, a canopy low enough to scrape trucks in the driveway, or a tree shading out a lawn. We raise the crown over driveways and walks, cut limbs back from roofs and screen enclosures, and thin dense crowns to let light and wind through. Branches near power lines are the utility's job, and we leave them for FPL or LCEC.
Timing in Southwest Florida
Hardwoods here can be pruned most of the year. The weeks before June 1, when hurricane season begins, are the busiest for good reason: a tree pruned in spring has time to adjust before the summer storms. Dead, cracked or hanging limbs should come off as soon as you see them, whatever the month.
What We Handle
Pruning jobs are built from a few types of cuts, chosen tree by tree.
Structural pruning
Shortening competing trunks and weak forks so one strong leader carries the tree.
Crown thinning
Removing selected interior limbs to let wind and light through without stripping the tree.
Crown raising
Lifting low limbs over driveways, sidewalks, lawns and roofs.
Deadwood removal
Taking out dead and broken branches before they fall.
Roof and pool cage clearance
Cutting limbs back from roofs, gutters and screen enclosures.

Tree Trimming & Pruning Questions
How much does tree trimming cost in Fort Myers?
Homeyou's 2026 Fort Myers figures put trimming a medium tree at about $392 to $584. HomeGuide's national figures run from about $250 to $700 for trees up to 30 feet to $1,000 or more for trees over 60 feet. Access and how long since the tree was last pruned matter most.
What is wrong with topping a tree?
Topping cuts limbs back to stubs, which decay, and the tree answers with dense sprouts that are weakly attached and break easily in wind. Lee County's landscape rules treat topping and hat-racking of required trees as severe pruning, with fines per tree and replacement planting. Crown reduction and thinning to ANSI A300 reduce size without those problems.
How often should a live oak be pruned?
Young live oaks benefit from structural pruning every few years to keep one main trunk and well-spaced limbs. Mature, well-formed oaks often need only deadwood removal and clearance cuts every three to five years. A tree that has had storm damage should be looked at after the storm.
Can my neighbor's tree limbs be cut back over my yard?
In Florida a property owner can generally trim branches that hang over their side, at their own expense, as long as the work does not kill or seriously damage the tree. It is worth talking with your neighbor first, and we prune to the property line without harming the rest of the tree.
Does pruning help a tree survive a hurricane?
Good structural pruning lowers the odds of failure by removing weak forks, dead wood and overlong limbs. UF/IFAS notes that no tree is windproof, and species, soil, age and health matter too. Over-thinning or topping can make things worse.
