Across the River From Downtown
Tree Service in North Fort Myers covers a lot of ground. The community spreads over more than 49 square miles of land north of the Caloosahatchee, bordered by Cape Coral to the west and Charlotte County to the north, with US 41 running up the middle after it crosses the Caloosahatchee Bridge from downtown. Fort Myers Tree Service Pros works throughout it, from riverfront streets near the bridge to properties out along State Road 78 and the I-75 interchange at exit 143.
North Fort Myers is a community of owners, and many of them are retired. Census figures put the owner-occupied rate at 85.7% and the share of residents 65 or older at 45.8%, with a median age of 64 at the 2020 census. In practice that means two things for tree work. First, a lot of the people calling us no longer want to be on a ladder with a pole saw, and they shouldn't be. Second, many homes are lived in only part of the year. The 2020 census counted 28,395 housing units, about 23.5% of them vacant at the time of the count. If you split the year between here and somewhere else, we can set up a visit before you head north and finish the work while you're gone.
Lines and LCEC
North Fort Myers gets its power from LCEC. The cooperative's vegetation management program trims along its lines on a regular cycle, and it removes some fast-growing trees and palms that could interfere with primary lines. Its guidance is clear that only line clearance qualified arborists should work within 10 feet of electric lines, and it says few private tree companies hold that qualification. If you need private tree work near a distribution line, LCEC offers a free site visit and may do the work at no cost or make it safe for your contractor. Palms can't be reduced in height or directionally pruned, so LCEC recommends removal when a palm grows into its lines.
County rules
North Fort Myers is unincorporated Lee County. The county's vegetation guide says removing five or fewer trees a year from a single-family lot that already has a house doesn't need a permit. Larger clearing does, particularly on single-family properties of five acres or more.
Choosing what stays
When a big tree is close to the house, the question isn't always whether to cut it. UF/IFAS research on Florida hurricanes found that live oaks, sand live oaks and cabbage palms rank among the most wind resistant species, while laurel oaks and slash pines fall into a medium-low group and queen palms and Norfolk Island pines into the lowest. A properly pruned live oak often deserves to stay. A tall, leaning laurel oak with decay over a bedroom is a different decision.

North Fort Myers Questions
Will LCEC trim the tree near my power line for free?
Sometimes. LCEC offers a free site visit for private tree work within 10 feet of its distribution lines and may do the work at no cost or make it safe for your contractor. Call the cooperative at 239-656-2300.
Should I remove my laurel oak?
Not automatically. Laurel oaks are shorter lived than live oaks and rank lower for wind resistance, but a healthy one can be pruned and kept. We look for decay, cracks and dead limbs before recommending removal.
Can you do the work while I'm up north?
Yes. We can walk the yard with you before you leave, give you a written estimate, and do the work after you go. We send photos when it's done.
