Iona's Trees Take Weather From Every Direction
Tree Service in Iona has to account for weather that doesn't always come from the Gulf. On January 16, 2022, a strong EF2 tornado tore through the community, causing major damage and injuring three people. Eight months later, Hurricane Ian brought surge to the mouth of the Caloosahatchee, where the National Hurricane Center estimated 6 to 9 feet of inundation and the Punta Rassa sensor, just west of Iona, measured 8.37 feet. Fort Myers Tree Service Pros helps Iona homeowners deal with the trees those storms damaged and get the survivors ready for the next round.
The setting. Iona sits in southwestern Lee County, about 4 miles northeast of the Sanibel Causeway and 11 miles southwest of central Fort Myers. McGregor Boulevard crosses it from northeast to southwest, Summerlin Road marks its southern edge, and to the north lies the tidal Caloosahatchee, with Cape Coral across the water. More than a third of the community's total area is water, mostly that river estuary. Canal and river lots mean salt exposure, soft ground near seawalls and trees that lean toward the open water.
Tornado damage is different. Hurricanes push trees in one general direction for hours. A tornado twists and snaps them in seconds, and it leaves damage that is easy to miss from the ground: limbs split partway, bark torn loose, tops broken inside the canopy. If your street was in the path of the 2022 tornado and a tree there looks fine, it is still worth having someone look up into the crown. Cracks that open slowly over a few seasons are a common source of falling limbs.
Owners who aren't always here. Iona's population skews older and seasonal. Census QuickFacts puts 59.3% of residents at 65 or older and the average household at 1.80 people, and the 2020 census found 36.6% of the community's 13,876 housing units vacant at the time of the count. Many Iona properties are winter homes, condos or rentals. We can meet a manager or neighbor on site, send photos, and keep an eye on timing so the work is done before hurricane season and before you return.
What we usually do here.
- Remove palms and trees killed by surge or salt
- Prune storm-cracked limbs and torn tops left from 2022
- Trim coconut, royal and Christmas palms on canal lots
- Thin dense canopies on trees beside pool cages
- Grind stumps so lawns and beds can be redone
Rules in Iona. Iona is unincorporated, so Lee County's vegetation rules apply. Removing five or fewer trees a year from a single-family lot with an existing home doesn't require a county permit, according to the county's guide. Mangroves along the river and canals are a separate matter under state law, which protects red, white and black mangroves whether they are alive or dead.

Iona Questions
My tree survived the 2022 tornado. Could it still be damaged?
Yes. Tornadoes twist limbs and can leave cracks that aren't visible from the ground. If a tree was in or near the tornado's path, have the crown inspected, especially limbs over the roof or driveway.
Can you trim palms at my condo or HOA in Iona?
Yes. We work for individual owners and associations. For shared property, the association usually has to approve the work and the estimate.
Is salt water still affecting my trees after Ian?
It can. Salt-stressed trees often show thin canopies and dieback at branch tips for a season or more. A tree that keeps losing ground year after year usually won't recover, and we can tell you when it's time to replace it.
Do you handle trees along canals and seawalls in Iona?
Yes. On canal lots we lower limbs and palm sections by rope so nothing lands on the seawall, dock or boat lift, and we keep the stump grinder back from the wall's tiebacks. If a tree's roots are lifting the seawall cap, we'll point that out in the estimate so you can talk to a marine contractor too.
